Abstract

The waste polyethylene in Korea is rapidly increasing to the annual average of 6,375tons in 2018, was incinerated or buried without recycle, causing serious environmental pollution and ecosystem destruction. When the asphalt is mixed with proper dosage of waste plastic (WP), the temperature sensitivity and durability of the asphalt mixture can be improved. However when WP is used as an asphalt modifier, only about 0.5% to 0.6% of WP can be used to the total weight of the mixture. Therefore, it is necessary to increase recycling amount of WP stably as much as possible. In this study, waste plastic aggregate (WPA) was manufactured using various waste plastics by extruding at a high temperature, and the 5% to 9% of total aggregate could be replaced with the WPA without heating when mixed. Mix design was carried out using WPA and optimum asphalt content (OAC) was determined for the asphalt mixture of BB-2 and MC-1. Fundamental properties of WPA recycled asphalt mixture were evaluated to determine proper content of WPA by total weight of mixture. It was found that the 5% of WPA was proper content for the BB-2 and MC-1 mixtures.
