Information
This study evaluated rut resistance characteristics of warm-mix asphalt (WMA) concretes in comparison with hot-mix asphalt concretes. A total of 16 asphalt concretes, which were evaluated in this study, included 8 WMA concretes and 8 HMA concretes. One base asphalt, three polymers (two SBSs and one LV) and two aggregates (13 and 19 mm) were used to prepare polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) concretes for WMA and HMA. One WMA additive, wax compound, was used for preparing non-modified and polymer-modified WMA (PWMA). In general, the asphalt concretes with the higher deformation strength (SD) showed lower rut depth in wheel tracking test. Even though, SD values of WMA were all satisfied specification limit, those of HMA were somewhat higher. In conclusion, the WMA concretes had weaker rut resistance than the HMA concretes which were prepared using the same aggregates and the same PG grading binder, except for WMA additive. Therefore, the rut resistance of WMA concretes used in this study needs to be improved further.
