Abstract
It is a well-known fact that the asphalt mixes are stripped without using an anti-stripping agent (ASA) if the granite-base aggregates are used. As an ASA, the hydrated lime (HL) has been widely used for many years in many countries including Korea. These days, many brands of liquid-type ASA (LA) developed in Korea provide the anti-stripping function properly. Since, in addition to anti-stripping function, the HL provides anti-aging function retarding age-hardening of the binder, it will be an important investigation to examine if the anti-aging function is provided by the LAs too. If the oxidation is retarded during the short-term aging (STA) stage, the service life of the asphalt pavement will be extended as an additional advantage. Therefore, this study investigated anti-aging effect of several LAs together with HL in terms of absolute viscosity (AV). It was found that HL provided a significant retardation of age hardening measured by AV after STA, compared with the binder of the mix without any ASA. However, most of the LAs did not show significant retardation of age hardening in severe aging condition. Therefore, unlikel the anti-stripping function, it was difficult to say that the LA provided an anti aging function to the asphalt mixes.
