Abstract
The deformation strength (SD) measured by Kim Test has been proved to have very good correlation (R2>0.9) with the result of rut-related test, such as wheel tracking for dense-graded mixtures. Therefore, the SD was introduced as a standard criteria in the mix design of asphalt mixture by Korea Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. Since the mixture with a high stiffness shows a high SD and rut resistance, the SD is a function of stiffness of the binder used when aggregate variation is limited. On the other hand, the tensile strength, which is an index of cracking resistance, is also known to be a function of stiffness of the binder used in the mixture. In this study, the data for SD and indirect tensile strength (ITS) of various types of asphalt mixtures were used to find out correlation of the two properties. Relatively high R2 values (0.64 or higher on average) were observed in correlation analyses. This is an indication that the So is one of the valid properties for estimation of mixture's rutting resistance and some cracking resistance.
