Information
Effects of Zinc doped Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (Zn-Mg-Al LDHs) and Mg-Al LDHs on physical and ultraviolet (UV) aging properties of asphalt were evaluated by conventional physical properties, dynamic rheological characteristics and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Tlie results show that the addition of LDHs increases the softening point, decrease the penetration and enhance the high-temperature rutting resistance of the asphalt. The increment of softening point and decrement of penetration of the asphalt are both inhibited obviously, and complex modulus aging index of asphalt is also decreased after UV aging due to the introduction of LDHs, which indicates that LDHs modified asphalt possesses excellent UV aging resistance. By comparison, Zn-Mg-Al LDHs are superior to Mg- Al LDHs in improving aging performance of asphalt, which is due to the more outstanding UV shielding of Zn-Mg- Al LDHs in comparison with Mg-Al LDHs, leading to a beneficial effect in improving UV aging performance of asphalt. FTIR analysis shows that LDHs restrains the formation of oxygen-containing functional groups in asphalt during the UV aging procedure, similarly, Zn-Mg-Al LDHs exhibits more effective inhibitory effect than Mg-Al LDHs.
