Information
Surveys indicated that for the road pavement, product quantity of hot asphalt mixtures is decreasing but in stead that of emulsion asphalt mixtures is increasing especially in United States and Europe. It is due to the green house gas such as carbon dioxide coming out of hot asphalt paving process and the carbon dioxide is known to be harmful to human health and environment. This will be a trend and this study will support a opportunity for going along the trend. However the durability of the emulsion asphalt is poor, so it is damaged easily. This study was aimed to develop a new type of emulsion asphalt and to develop a new type of asphalt modification technique which can enhance the durability of emulsion asphalt while depressing occurrence of the plastic deformation and crack. Polymers, specifically polymer latex such as water dispersed PU, SBR latex, NR latex were used to improve the durability of emulsion asphalt. Also sodium benzoate(SB) was added as another type of modifier for modifying the asphalt emulsion by in-situ polymerization with light(UV) irradiation. Results showed that SB-added emulsion asphalt showed superior properties to without and NR gave the best properties among the polymer modifiers. TGA showed the the superior properties were endowed to the crosslinking structure formed by SB photopolymerization.
