Information
The striping of asphalt occurs due to the decreased adhesion between aggregate and asphalt by water permeation into the asphalt mixture. One of the primary causes of pothole is striping which is prevalent in the old asphalt pavements. Therefore, the physical property information as an index of aging of the reclaimed asphalt pavement from pothole (pothole RAP) is important for the mix-design of the repairing (fresh) asphalt mixture. An experimental study was carried out to examine aging level of pothole RAP in teims of fundamental physical properties. The information obtained from this study is to be used in selecting proper materials for repair by infrared heating technique, which is one of the widely used methods for pothole repair in asphalt pavement. Also, to evaluate aging level change in the process of repair, the pothole RAP mixtures on the surface after 5-minute and 15-minute infrared heating were collected for physical property evaluation. The binder was recovered form these RAPs and the measured properties included the absolute viscosity at 60°C, the stiffness (G*/sin8) and Pass/Fail (P/F) temperature by DSR, in addition to the asphalt content and aggregate gradation by sieve analysis. Aging level of the binder of pothole RAP was compared with various binders, and it was found that pothole RAP was aged more significantly than the mixes 什om other locations in the same pavement. It was also found that during the heating by infrared heater, the viscosity, stiffness and P/F temperature were slightly increased. Although the final mixture placed in the repaired pothole was found to be improved than pothole RAP, its aging level was still higher than the normal asphalt mixture, indicating mandatory addition of a rejuvenator for the later repair mix design.
