Abstract
This study evaluated moisture susceptibility of asphalt concrete mixture using the deformation strength (Sd) of Kim Test and the rut depth (RD) of wheel tracking test. The So ratio (SDR) was calculated as the ratio of SD values before and after submerging the specimen at 60°C water for 48 hours. The RD ratio (RDR) was calculated as the ratio of RD values before and after submerging at 60°C water for 48 hours. The gneiss and granite aggregates with maximum size of 13 and 19 mm were used for preparing dense-graded hot-mix asphalt mixtures. The study results showed that SDR values of 89% and 50% were obtained from gneiss and granite mixtures, respectively, with a range from 20% to over 100%. However, the WT test could not detect poorer rut resistances from the water-submerged specimens at 60°C for 48 hours. Therefore, it was found that the Sd of Kim Test was an effective test protocol for moisture susceptibility testing of asphalt mixtures.
