Abstract
The hot-mix asphalt (HMA) concrete is known to be subjected to the differential thermal contraction (DTC) at low temperature. The DTC causes tensile strength reduction at a certain low temperature or below due to the internal thermal stress building up over the tensile strength of the mixture. The warm-mix asphalt (WMA) concrete is produced approximately 20% lower temperature than the HMA. Therefore, it is important to evaluate DTC effect of WMA concrete in comparison with HMA. The tensile strength of selected HMA and WMA mixtures were measured at 25, 5, -5, -15 and -25°C by the indirect tensile stregth test. The results showed that the tensile strength of WMA was not inferior to that of HMA. The WMA showed less susceptibility to DTC than HMA. Therefore, the WMA mixtures were better than than the HMA mixtures in terms of tensile strength at low temperature.
