Abstract
A large amount of fossil fuel, used for heating hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixture, emits a large quantity of CO2, which is considered as a primary cause of global warming. To reduce this carbon emission, the warm-mix asphalt (WMA) method, which can produce asphalt mixes at approximately 20% lower level than HMA method, is developed recently. The WMA is also modified using polymer(s) for improving its performance in the pavement. In this study, selected modified WMA (MWMA) mixtures were produced and some properties were evaluated in comparison with those of modified HMA (MHMA). The deformation strength (SD) and wheel tracking (WT) were evaluated as high- temperature properties at 60°C. Indirect tensile strength was measured as ambient property at 25°C. The results showed that the MWMA mixtures were not statistically significantly different from MHMA at a = 0.05 level. Therefore, the MWMA mixtures evaluated in this study, which were produced at 25°C lower than MHMA, were found to be good pavement materials which could give advantages in reducing energy and carbon emission.
