Abstract
Using recycled and alternative materials in asphalt pavement is a crucial option not only for reducing costs but also for limiting the environmental impact on road construction. During the past decades, many road agencies in the U.S. and Canada have investigated the effect of various mechanical performance of adding Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and Taconite Aggregate (TA) on conventional asphalt mixtures. Then numerical limits were proposed based on the amount of materials which can be applied. In this study, In-Direct Tensile (IDT) creep and Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) fracture tests were performed to investigate and evaluate the basic mechanical performance of RAP (and/or TA) mixtures compared to the conventional ones especially at low temperature. As a result, RAP mixtures showed more brittle performance than the conventional asphalt mixture as expected. However, the differences of mechanical perfoiTnance were not significantly different from that of conventional mixtures when the RAP mixing proportion was around 20% with addition of TA was up to 55%.
