Information
This study analyzed the absolute viscosity of asphalt binder recovered from the aged asphalt mixture to examine the effect of two anti-oxidants (AO) on retarding aging of asphalt mixture. A chemical anti-oxidant (named KL in this study) and a hydrated lime (HL) were used when preparing the asphalt mixtures and the effect of aging retardation by the KL and HL was evaluated using absolute viscosity. The asphalt mixture was aged artificially in the laboratory in two stages; the short-term aging (SA) for one, two four hours at 160°C and 180°C, the long-term aging (LA) for 65 hours at 110°C for the mixtures after each SA treatment. It was found that the aging of asphalt mixtures retarding was found to be significantly retarded when the absolute viscosity was compared for the mixtures with and without AO after each stage of aging treatment. The viscosity levels of KL-and-HL-added asphalt mixtures were found be significantly reduced from that of normal asphalt mixture without those additives.
