Information
Warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technology allows asphalt to flow at a significantly lower temperature for mixing, paving and compaction. Since WMA is mixed and placed at a lower temperature, the amount of green house gas emission from the asphalt plant is reduced while conserving the energy. Recently, WMA technology has become more popular and been implemented quickly in the world. In this paper, stone mastic asphalt (SMA- WMA) mixtures produced with two blowing warm additives along with conventional SMA (WMA-HMA) mixtures were evaluated for their indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, temperature sensitivity, and permanent deformation. Based on the limited laboratory test results of SMA-WMA and SMA-HMA mixtures, blowing additives are effective in producing SMA-WMA mixtures at the lower temperature than SMA-HMA mixture. Performance characteristics of SMA-WMA mixtures using blowing additives are similar to SMA-HMA mixture in terms of indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, resilient modulus and permeant deformation.
